Michael Cowan and Spice Factory

Founded in 1994, Spice Factory was set up by Michael Cowan and Jason Piette. Armed with little more than a phone and a fax machine, the company began life in a small attic room above Brighton based D’Arcy’s Seafood Restaurant, owned by Michael’s mother. Graduating from Film & Television school, Michael had previously set up and run Iguana Video & TV, a video distribution company which also produced entertainment programmes for Channel 4. With over 45 films produced, co-produced and co-financed to date with a combined production spend of US$650M, Michael and Jason have succeeded in building Spice Factory into one of the UK’s leading and most dynamic independent film production businesses.

Recent films include The Merchant of Venice with Al Pacino, Joseph Fiennes and Jeremy Irons, Head in the Clouds starring Charlize Theron and Penelope Cruz, quirky romantic comedy Plots With A View (a.k.a. Undertaking Betty) starring Brenda Blethyn, Christopher Walken, Alfred Molina and Naomi Watts and The Statement, directed by Norman Jewison starring Michael Caine. LORD OF WAR Starring Nicholas Cage.
